Two Shoes Ranch
Two Shoes Ranch is a 2,242 acre private Ranch located in Pitkin County on the east side of Mount Sopris and south of the Town of Carbondale. The Ranch is undergoing numerous improvements and various roads, buildings and other infrastructure have recently been built, or are under construction, at the property. Resource Engineering, Inc. (RESOURCE) has provided water resource engineering services for the Ranch since 1999. Services provided by RESOURCE on the Ranch include water rights, water supply planning, and engineering design services.
Water Rights
RESOURCE has been extensively involved with water rights at the Ranch, providing plans for augmentation for the Beaver Camp Ponds, the Homestead Ponds, and Cow Camp Reservoir. This included providing technical information to support water right applications and establishing a water rights accounting program to ensure compliance with various water rights decrees. In order to facilitate the water rights accounting program, RESOURCE regularly assists in measuring the discharge of Thomas Creek within the Ranch. This information assists the Ranch Manager to comply with water right decrees and ensure that there is no injury to senior downstream water users. In addition to this work, RESOURCE has provided permitting assistance for several of the Ranch’s wells.
Engineering Design Services
Engineering Design Services provided to the Ranch have included conceptual design development, final engineering services during bidding, permitting, and services during construction (construction observation). For example, RESOURCE was hired to design, bid, and observe the construction of several reservoirs and irrigation systems at the Ranch.
- Cow Camp Reservoir – 12.4 Acre-Feet, Minor Class III Dam
The Reservoir provides a source of augmentation and wetland mitigation for the Homestead Ponds. The design included a ditch diversion off of Thomas Creek and Cow Creek to provide the source to fill and re-fill the reservoir. - Homestead Ponds No. 1 through 5 – 11.7 Acre-Feet, Total
A series of aesthetic and piscatorial ponds. Each pond contains a multi-stage outlet to lower the ponds commensurate with the evaporation rate during periods of a senior water right call. Upon completion, Cow Camp Reservoir will provide a source of augmentation water for the Homestead Ponds. - Beaver Camp Ponds – 1.9 Acre-Feet total
The two Beaver Camp Ponds were constructed for aesthetic and piscatorial uses. Similar to the Homestead Ponds, each Pond contains a multi-stage outlet to lower the reservoir commensurate with the evaporation rate during periods of a senior water right call. - Bane Meadow Irrigation System
The Bane Meadow is a 75 acre field that was historically irrigated by flood irrigation. RESOURCE designed a pressure irrigation system for the Meadow that utilized water from the Lost Basin Pipeline. - Gathering Meadow Irrigation System
The Gathering Meadow is situated down gradient of the Bane Meadow. RESOURCE designed an extension of the Bane Meadow Irrigation System to provide irrigation water to the Gathering Meadow. - St. John Pipeline
The St. John Pipeline is a 3,600 lineal foot gravity extension of the Lost Basin Pipeline. This extension provides water for irrigation of the St. John Meadow.
Engineering Design Services
During the course of our engineering work for Two Shoes Ranch, RESOURCE has helped secure numerous Local, State and Federal permits. For example, RESOURCE developed a Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) for the Ranch. The purpose of the SWMP is to provide a narrative description of the drainage and erosion control methods to be utilized during all construction activities at the Ranch.
